“Changing Futures through Fostering” Training Programme

Foster parents and young people who’ve been in care have helped design our training.

Foster parents and young people who’ve been in care have helped design our training.

Our agency has developed a training programme that meets the needs of foster parents so that they can meet the needs of children and young people. We know this because it was designed in part by local foster parents and young people who had been in care.

For children and young people in care to ever find some form of closure and begin to heal, a therapeutic foster parent is required.  Our fostering training, Changing Futures through Fostering, skills foster parents in a therapeutic approach covering topics such as how to manage under high pressure, stressful situations. A therapeutic parenting approach is not rocket science, in its simplest form it is parenting and nurturing a child that enables them to grow, mature whilst considering the trauma and behaviours that may have affected them. It’s by sticking with children when things can get tough so they can start to develop a sense of self belonging in the home you share with them.

Understanding the impact of attachment experiences both for children fostered and their foster parents.

Paying attention to relationships involved in the fostering home and the impact of fostering on significant relationships.

Mentalizing is a form of imaginative mental activity, namely, perceiving and interpreting human behaviour of yourself and others. It is a key approach in our fostering training and helps foster parents build up their skillset around thinking and acting in high pressure stressful situations.

Training involved in understanding child development and the impact of trauma and abuse on children’s development.

Our agency was founded by a relationship focused charity That expertise means we keep relationships at the forefront of all the training. We will be mindful of all the relationships in the fostering household.

Learning is a process and it doesn’t end with training…. In fact really that’s just the start! If you foster with us, you’ll come to monthly group meetings with other foster parents supported by a skilled psychotherapist who will help you build and develop your skills.

What Will I learn?

Across 10 training sessions we will give you practical training that gives you tools and techniques to use in real life. Our training gives jargon free explanations about why and when to use them and how they might help.

Your training will cover mandatory elements such as first aid, fire safety and child development. Where we differ to other agencies is we go that step further, covering additional topics such as  mentalization and therapeutic parenting approaches.

Training is arranged at convenient times, is flexible taking into account everyone’s commitment and a mix of both digital and in person session.

Training That Builds Understanding

Our training programme aims to promote sensitive and attuned foster care. Which helps develop a sense of belonging for foster children in their foster family and supports the child in their  their development.

It’s important when looking after children who have experienced a trauma that foster parents can understand different child behaviours. We will do this by providing the right levels of training and support that feels centered around each individual fostering household. This support is key to maintaining placement stability. You can watch Sally, our training consultant talk about what to expect on our training and why we think our training is likely to help

The facilitators made the programme. It was their approach & skills that enabled an environment in which we could all learn and feel at ease to ask the questions we wanted to and get the best out the course.
