Mark phoned gave me a call the other day, and the fostering assessment is done!
Now, the anticipation of a panel date looms closer. Mark’s reassurance that we’re nearing the final steps brings a mix of excitement and nerves. However, for now, my focus remains on training and preparation, and laying the groundwork for the journey ahead. From the moment I submitted my application and started on the assessment process, the prospect of joining the fostering panel has been both daunting and exciting. It means I am very close to becoming a foster parent, and ultimately getting to make a positive impact on a child’s life. I don’t think I’ve felt like this since finishing my teacher training many moons ago!
I feel as if the training I have been given has definitely provided me with essential skills and knowledge, and whilst my pre-foster parent training is nearly over, it’s definitely reassuring that there are consistent sessions for after I become a foster parent.
Now, admittedly I didn’t know a lot about panel and what it was at first. After talking to Mark, panel members are made up of people who have some experience with children and young people. This could be former foster parents, social workers, teachers and even doctor or nurses, for example. The panel serves as a crucial checkpoint, where the group look over the assessment and ask any questions that they may have about me and my life. It all sounds daunting, but it feels better knowing what to expect. Preparation for the panel involves thorough reflection on my motivations, values, and readiness to undertake the responsibilities of fostering. It’s also a chance to show my aspirations, demonstrate understanding of the challenges and rewards within being a foster parent, and be able to show demonstrated my support network and resources available to ensure the well-being of the child.
I must say the support and communication has been great throughout. Fiona, part of the fostering admin and support team, has really helped with all the paperwork and getting everything sorted. It’s a thorough process but everything has just been done with ease!
I know that embracing therapeutic fostering isn’t just about embarking on a new chapter in my life—it’s about opening my heart and home to a young person who deserves love, care, and support. And I hope I get this across to panel and the agency. I’m nervous but I realise this is a really big step to becoming a fostering parent.
